Divine Tension is a couture-informed fashion collection that explores modern faith as an internal, personal practice rather than an institutional one. Drawing from the sacred artistry of Catholic vestments, the collection reinterprets religious symbolism, ritual dress, and clerical colour coding through contemporary tailoring and subtle streetwear influence, examining the tension between devotion and autonomy, purity and power, and restraint and self-authorship.
Developed as part of my final year studying Fashion Design at the University of South Wales, this collection is deeply personal. It sits under my emerging brand, Camilleri Collective, named in honour of my Nan, whose devotion to the Catholic Church shaped my upbringing and inspired the collection’s engagement with clergy and religious iconography. Generational influences run throughout the work: my mother’s fearless approach to dressing informs the confidence of the silhouettes, streetwear references stem from growing up immersed in that culture through my dad and godfather, and my grandad’s appreciation for classic suiting informs the collection’s emphasis on structure and tailoring. Together, these influences create garments that balance authority with softness, discipline with ease.
The collection unfolds as a journey of spiritual and emotional transformation, expressed through sculptural tailoring, controlled embellishment, and symbolic colour. White and gold reference purity, sanctity, and transcendence, while red speaks to sacrifice and devotion. Purple signals restraint and reflection, green represents growth and continuity, and blue is used to evoke calm, faith, and quiet soul searching. These colours function as narrative tools rather than decoration, allowing each look to embody belief, tension, and hope as lived experiences.
